Lot 787
Q. Lutatius Cerco, 109-108 BC. Denarius (Silver, 18 mm, 3.79 g, 12 h), Rome. ROMA / [CERCO] Head of Roma to right, wearing crested helmet decorated with plume and two stars; behind, star (mark of value). Rev. Q•LVTATI / Q Galley to right within oak wreath; helmeted head of Roma on prow; another head further back. Babelon (Lutatia) 2. Crawford 305/1. RBW 1146. Sydenham 559. Nicely toned. Nearly very fine.

The two heads on the galley on the reverse represent an interesting and rarely described detail of this coin type. The head on the prow likely represents Roma, while the one at the stern is probably Apollo or Sol, as a radiant crown is visible.
